THE HISTORY OF THE LOFT
The sail loft in Labrador was established by Rob White Sailmakers in 1987. As the local sailmaker, Rob put many local junior and youth sailors through his lofts doors, offering apprenticeships, holiday work and mentoring. Some of these sailors have gone on to become world champion sailors in their own right. In 1992 Rob brought Graham Sherring onboard as an 18-year-old sail making apprentice. Graham had been racing dinghies since a kid as well as yachts up and down the east coast of Australia.
SPECIALISTS WITH EXPERIENCE
Graham has now been sail making for 26 years and has spent most of that time producing performance cruising sails for large catamarans and monohulls. As Graham has always had his own boats, he realizes the importance of everything being precise. This is the reason the company prides itself on providing great customer service, the highest of quality products and in particular, attention to detail.
Graham successfully campaign a Leech 750 Sports Boat. He has achieved some of the highest accolades for his sailing successes over the years at both national and state levels. He has been the Australian Sportsboat Champion (2016) and three-time QLD Champion. He has also been asked on many occasions to provide his knowledgeable advice and expertise to others in conferences throughout the sailing community. Graham sits on the Southport Yacht Club’s Sailing Committee and Handicap Committee.
Adding to Graham’s expertise in the loft, is Sailmaker Caedric Reader, William Pringle and Apprentice Sail maker Ashleigh Swadling. Caedric campaigns on the IRC Championship circuit around the world and has also done Sydney to Hobarts. He comes from a big loft in Sydney is our go to for new race sails with exotic fabrics. Will is a seasoned Laser Champion and has been sail making since 1983. He excels in his craftsmanship and attention to detail in all repairs. He has sailed dinghies and Off-the-beach catamarans since a young age and not only has competed in the worlds but has worked behind the scenes as measurer, treasurer, sailing instructor and committee member. Ashleigh is a highly competitive youth sailor. This earnt her a finalist spot for Youth Sailor of the year 2019. She has competed in multiple Opti campaigns in Australia and overseas and now has move onto the world stage in the Nacra 15 class.
Helen in the office hails from Cape Town South Africa where sailing around Cape Point from the age of 7 on her father’s 33ft yacht in Double Cape Races etc has given her an appreciation for the lighter winds of Queensland.
She has worked for Ronstan for eight years as the Marine Sales Representative looking after all chandleries and boat fitouts throughout Queensland, Northern Territory, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. She understands your boats layouts and loadings as she did the fitouts from scratch alongside the boatbuilders. She has been the Sailing Administrator and Sailing Instructor at Southport Yacht Club and has worked on Superyachts travelling the world.
Working as a team with our Evolution lofts around the world, which include New Zealand, USA, Canada, Singapore, and Palma de Mallorca, we have found stronger ways to design, engineer, build and deliver a more innovative product.
Our company prides itself on the fact that all sails are custom made to the client’s specific needs and are manufactured here in-house in our loft on the Gold Coast, Australia.
